Take me back to 2006. At the beginning of that year, the influential businessman František Mrázek was shot, Mirek Topolánek and his ODS party won the elections to the Chamber of Deputies, the world was moved by the premiere of the film The Da Vinci Code in Cannes and the pinnacle of technology was the ability to play MP3 files and videos on mobile phones such as the Sony Ericsson K800i or the very popular Nokia 6233.
That’s pretty prehistoric, isn’t it?
Now imagine that this is the year of the last participation of the Czech national team in the “Mundial”. In case you missed the term, it’s a global term for the World Cup.
Our goal was defended by Petr Čech, the newly twenty-four-year-old goalkeeper of Chelsea in London, still without his iconic helmet. The defence was led by Zdeněk Grygera from Ajax in the Netherlands, while in the midfield, names like Karel Poborský, the little Mozart Tomáš Rosický and the Ballon d’Or winner Pavel Nedvěd impressed with their play. And in attack, the now legendary Koller-Baros duo was in charge.
But this summer will be history will be rewritten!
At the end of March, after two nerve-wracking matches – both decided in our favour by a penalty shootout – we secured our participation in this year’s World Cup in Mexico.
At the last edition in Qatar in 2022, nearly 3.5 million fans watched the games live in the stadiums and nearly 3 billion people watched on TV.
At least on TV, of course, we’ll be cheering too. But you can go right to the venue.
